The map Represents the first stage of the Battle of Convoy CW8, July 25th 1940.

German Dive Bombers, long range heavy artillery based at Calais and E-boats attacked the 21 ship coal convoy as it worked its way through the Dover Straits. Leading the air attack came nearly 50 Bf109's, swarming in at sea level to be met by the Spitfires of 65 Squadron, then providing air cover for the convoy. Ju87 Stuka's followed screeming out of the sky to dive bomb the coal ships. Hurricanes from 32 and 615 Squadrons arrived as the battle raged and joined in the furious sea level dogfight. 54 Squadron Spitfires also answered the call for assistance and engaged the Bf109's that were providing direct escort to the Ju87's. The British pilots, though heavily outnumbered throughout the fight, put up a spirited defense, giving at least as well as they got.

The Battle continued into the afternoon and evening as waves of Ju-87's and Ju-88's continued to strike the convoy as it made its way west. In an effort to preserve fighter strength for the Struggle they knew to be comming, Fighter Command refused to commit the bulk of its fighters to the Channel convoy battles.

Eleven merchant coal ships of convoy CW8 out of twenty-one were sunk in the Straits as well as two Royal Navy destroyers. When the battle ended, Only 2 out of 21 Merchant ships were able to reach their destination at Portland.

Sorry for the interrupt at mission start.

I forgot to update the server to use the 352nd map.

It will be starting at 2:20pm EDT.

Note to all:  You must have run the Ultr@Pack Update & Restore program since 6/18.2010 to be up to date with the latest 352nd map that this mission is based on.

If you experience trouble loading the mission, run the Ultr@PAck updater

I was able to get in a couple sorties after the mission got going & before I had to leave to go to work. Went very well as far as I could tell, good coordination on blue side. Server population went from ~14 when I got on to ~40 when I left an hour later.

Love the special events like this, wish I could fly more often. Thanks for taking the time, WildWillie.
