-HISTORICAL BACKGROUND-
Operation Hailstone was a large scale air and surface raid by US Naval forces against the Japanese Naval anchorage and airfield installations on Truk Atoll. Truk had been a primary base for the Imperial Japanese Combined Fleet prior to the start of the Second World War and with its excellent harbor facilities and multiple airfields, it remained a critical support base for garrisons fighting throughout the South Pacific. On 17 Feb, 1944, aircraft from the fast carriers of  US Task Force 58, submarines and heavy surface units attacked the Japanese at Truk to eliminate possible threats against the US landings on Eniwetok. Heavy strikes continued day and night through Feb 18th. When the attack ended, 3 Cruisers, 4 Destroyers, several smaller warships and 32 merchant ships with their valuable cargos had been sunk. In addition the Japanese lost nearly 270 aircraft on the ground and in air combat. The defeat was total.  US losses amounted to 25 planes destroyed and 40 men lost, 11 as a result of a night torpedo attack on the USS Intrepid. After Operation Hailstone, Truk ceased to exist as a Fleet anchorage and was eventually bypassed by the rapidly advancing Allied forces.
