This week's Bomber Night mission is called "Bastogne Blitzkrieg".

It's back to World War II.  This mission attempts to recreate desperate attempts by American fighter-bombers to stop the Wehrmacht's drive upon Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge a/k/a Wacht Am Rhein.  Your goal as a P-47 jabo pilot is to stop the German armor and mechanized forces from destroying the beleaguered 101st Airborne and other Allied forces in the important crossroads town of Bastogne in the Ardennes.

This mission brings back the stock winter Ardennes map, so flight times are short for the bombers.  The USAAF P-47D is the featured bomber.  The RAF Spitfire Mk IXe is the escort.  The Bf-109G-10 is the defender.

There are low clouds (about 300m), with snowfall.  The cloud cover is broken at times, which may allow defenders to swoop down from above.  The bombers ought to stay low, right at the lower limits of the clouds, or instead on the deck.

The targets are German armored/mechanized columns (mix of tanks, half-tracks, and trucks), and German supply columns (half-trucks and trucks), which are advancing upon the besieged town of Bastogne from all directions along various roads.

Allied infantry units are scattered throughout Bastogne, in and about buildings.  Anti-tank infantry units are also present.  If the P-47s don't destroy enemy columns before reaching Bastogne, the columns will enter into Bastogne and attempt to destroy Allied infantry units.  Based upon testing, it presented some interesting battles within Bastogne, with the anti-tank infantry in particular holding its own until overwhelmed.  Red can lose the mission if the German armor destroys enough Allied infantry.  If the German forces enter Bastogne, be very careful with your attacks in order to avoid any friendly kills.

Please enjoy and let me know your comments.  Here is a screenshot of the battle area, as well as some battle scenes.

Thanks Mack for the info. The CAS for the CQB in Bastogne sounds like a good fun.

My question would be the next: Do we have any candidates to fly today's BN? I know August is the typical "cucumber season" though it would be nice to restore those "mass Bomber Nights" with a bunch of people on TS.

It is a nice tradition on WoP, and I am a kind of a traditionalist in this sense.

Of course ones life has more important things most of the time, but if there are any free chaps to join up I'd be happy to share some time there...

There are no real pilots anymore. Just people in nifty uniforms who operate computers, Real pilots lived in the old days....

Once summer ends, we may be able to get a bigger crowd for some mass bomber nights in the fall.  We might even try to run (or re-run) some during different times (such as a Sunday afternoon), if of a type suitable for large crowds and an epic scenario.
