Why do you not get a fighter kill when you bring down a plane while flying a P-38 or one of the TB's

Taking bomb and rocket loadouts categorizes your sortie as a bomber sortie so you will not get kills credited as a fighter. You still get credit for shooting down planes.

Interesting.  I never knew that.  Thanks for the info.

Flies as "CH3"

I don't know if it occurs on Zekes, but several fighter planes on Spits v. 109 Mod will also NEVER count as fighter kills, even if they are configured as pure fighters (i.e. no bombs, no rockets).  I've enountered the error for the Italian G50 and the German Bf109G5.

However, none of this will make any difference to players' positions on the fighter pilots' leader board. This is because the Top Fighter Pilots are ranked according to Return Alive Kills from ALL sorties, not just FIGHTER sorties (as they perhaps should). This is fair enough when fighters are used for both ground attack and for fighting; but it does present a slight anomaly: If you fly nothing but bombers, it is possible to become listed as the 'Top' fighter pilot (at least in theory). If this were to happen, the leader board would show you (rather perplexingly) at the top with zero Sorties, zero Confirmed Kills and a large number of Return Alive Kills. In the past I've seen figures similar to these (but not quite so extreme) against someone's name on the fighter pilots' leader board. (NB: The "kills credited as a fighter" and "fighter kills" referred to above by Faust and Kibbey correspond to the Confirmed Kills on the leader board, not the Return Alive Kills which determine the ranking.)

CH3,
Some aircraft are categorized as bombers as that is there use. In those instances all sorties flown are bomber sorties.

Rexavian,
Correct. That is the way the stats are setup at the moment.

Faust,
Thanks for the clarity, but could you explain how a Bf-109G5, a contemporary front line aircraft, without ordnance, on a map completely lacking strafeable targets (i.e. 2nd Front) should be considered a bomber/jabo and not a fighter?
I can see how the G50, being obsolescent on the Battleaxe map, might be viewed as suitable to ground attack only though.

Don't take this request seriously.  I assume for the G5 it is just an honest mistake that got into the system, and for the G50 it is judgement call I won't second guess.  It would be nice to have "perfect" stat keeping, but I'm glad enough for what is available.  If I REALLY cared, I would keep my own stats.

I seem to have read past the mention of the 109 in your post. I agree that must be a database entry error.
